Denise Rossetti dishes it out

Strongman, Phoenix Rising book 3 releases tomorrow. Please tell us a bit about this book and the series.

Our books are our babies and we all know parents shouldn’t have a favourite child, but… There’s something special for me about STRONGMAN. I actually shouldn’t have written it. I had a couple of projects for Berkley on my plate at the time, but for whatever reason, I was absolutely compelled. Once Fort and Griff walked into my head, I couldn’t stop thinking about them. They became achingly real to me. Theirs is a real love story, very human - no magic, no feathers or flying or dragons, just a hard hurting warrior, fighting his soul-deep attraction to a circus acrobat, needing him desperately, but knowing he shouldn’t. It’s drippingly romantic, but also very, very male.

A large part of the inspiration came from Brokeback Mountain. When the credits rolled up, were you in tears? Boy, I was!

Then I got mad – two souls destined to be together, so much love, so totally wasted. All because of the society those men lived in. But what if a similar situation occurred in another place, at another time? In a world I know well, like Phoenix? My writer's brain started churning...

A hard-bitten mercenary who’s had a gutful of mud and blood and death, Fortitude McLaren joins the Ten Nations Fair as a roustabout. Tough, cold and competent, he’s shocked and angered by his hunger for Griff, a circus acrobat. Brought up in the bigoted society of the Straight Church, Fort regards manlove with casual contempt. Not for him. Never for him.

Athletic, cocky and single-minded about he wants, Griff sets about getting it. Fort fights with everything in him, but Griff affects him like no one else. It’s not just his strong, supple body. Fort is irresistibly drawn by the openhearted friendship the other man offers so freely.

Fort may have found a friend, but the cruel memories of his childhood are the greatest enemy of all. When a job for Jan the Aetherii puts Griff in danger, Fort discovers what’s really at risk — everything he is and everything he’s ever believed in. To save Griff’s life and preserve his own sanity, Fort must not only fight the battle in his soul, he must win it.

There’s a chance to win a free download on my blog, but be quick! Closes midnight tonight. Check the Contest Pages for details. All you have to do is leave a comment. Easy peasy.

Ellora's Cave tomorrow. Yeehah!!! Excited? Me? Nah, not at all. *cough, cough*

As for the Phoenix Rising series, it started with GIFT OF THE GODDESS, then TAILSPIN and now STRONGMAN. You don’t have to read them in sequence, though it’s probably better that way. Each is a stand-alone.

What do you feel is the draw of m/m interaction in your stories for a genre that has a primarily female readership?

I’ve thought about this and thought about it. I still can’t quite put my finger on it. (So to speak. heh heh) I used to find men who were turned on by lesbian love scenes amusing and a bit pathetic. Now I feel ashamed for being so superior, because m/m totally pushes every button I’ve got.

All I can think is that if one beautiful man is a turn on, then two of them – interacting with intensity - is more than twice as good. That said, effeminate men don’t do it for me. They have to be real men, thinking and acting like men. I’ve read books in which one of the male lovers could be called a “a girl in a man suit”, a pseudo man, one who thinks like a woman - usually the author. I hate that with a passion.

I guess also that m/m stories allow the female reader to “switch bodies”, experiencing male emotion and sexual pleasure, both as the dominant partner and the submissive. Wouldn’t it be amazing to try it for real?

So I try incredibly hard to ensure the testosterone flows, regardless of who is doing whom. Male on male sex has a completely different emotional quality to it, quite apart from the obvious mechanics and the choreography. If I’ve done my job right, there’s a fight/sex scene in STRONGMAN that should suck the breath right out of your lungs. It certainly did mine!

So far, I haven’t written a hero who is exclusively gay, but who knows? I’m probably going to try. What I find excruciatingly erotic is the dynamic of a man who thinks he’s straight, but who meets his soul mate in the body of another man. All that shocked, terrified desire. Hoo boy!

What do you love most about being an author?

To be frank? The validation. When a reader writes to tell me my books have given her pleasure, it just makes my day. Heck, it makes my week! The two ultimate compliments are – “I re-read it.” and “You kept me up all night.” They just make me beam. I guess I really am a hussy at heart! *grin*

The other part is the connection with strangers all over the world. I just go right ahead and adopt them as my friends. I’m a highly extroverted person. (Can you tell? LOL) I thrive on company. And I purely LOVE to talk.

I’ve just kicked off a blog. It’s called Under and Over because while I’m Down Under, most of my readers are Over There. Geddit? I’m having a blast with it and I’d love to see all you Hussy gals pop in. Sally’s already dropped by. Hi, Sally! *waving*

It’s a wonder I get any writing done at all!

The money’s just jam. Yes, it’s nice, no doubt about it, but I won’t be giving up the day job any time soon. And getting paid is just another form of validation anyhow.

Tell us something quirky or interesting about yourself we wouldn’t otherwise know.

Hmm, the Hussies already know I love tarty red stilettos – my hussy heels!

Let’s see, I have a birthmark on my shoulder blade. It looks a bit like a cross-eyed butterfly. When I was teaching, years ago, I wore a summer dress with a low-cut back one day and the kids asked me about it. I told them I was a lost Ruritanian Princess and it was the Royal Birthmark. One dear little soul believed me for a whole three minutes.

What is the writing process like for you? Do you plot out every detail ahead of time or write more spontaneously? Do you need quiet or music playing in the background?

I’m what other writers call a “pantser”. For me, writing is a completely organic, instinctive process. I don't plan much, or write character interviews or plot outlines and I purely loathe synopses. That sort of stuff kills it for me. I love the thrill of watching the story unfold under my fingers. I'll write until I hit the edge of the "mist" and then I...wait...and wait... Eventually, the fog clears and I can "see" what happens next. I do always know how it begins and what happens in the end. It’s the bit in between that’s um, interesting…

Characters take up residence in my head without so much as a by your leave, and talk and fight and uh...do all sorts of wicked things. *wg* It happens hen I’m driving, or in the shower, or dropping off to sleep or out walking with My Beloved and the dog. Every now and then, he’ll grin and ask, “Where are you now?” And I go, “Huh?” Because I sure ain’t in Kansas, Dorothy. It’s like having a movie screening just behind your eyes and it’s good because now I’m never bored. Have to wait at the doctor’s? In an endless staff meeting? No problem. *smile*

Funnily enough, despite the home movies in the cranium, I'm a very slow, very deliberate writer. I don't often get carried away and have words simply flow out of my fingers. I have to dig for every single one, which means I need to concentrate. I have a timer on the computer and I turn it for 45 minutes. When it goes off, I'm allowed to check my email. (Did I say I need a 12 step program?)

The music depends on the mood required. I have a number of playlists - an upbeat, rock ‘n’ country one for when I need energy, a lush operatic one for over-the-top emotion, a Celtic or a baroque, liturgical one for soothing background. I’m currently obsessed with Rufus Wainwright. And I’ve always been obsessed by Leonard Cohen.

I also burn essential oils, soothing florals like lavender or bergamot or rose with a few drops of something sharp like lemongrass, to stimulate creativity. That's the theory, anyway. I don't like heavy, musky scents. And I drink a lot of tea. No coffee.

Where do you see yourself as an author in the future? Is there a specific direction you would like your writing to go?

I guess I’m headed for New York and a print career. Well, I'm hoping so. I have a four book contract with Berkley for THE FOUR-SIDED PENTACLE series. The first, THE FLAME AND THE SHADOW, will be released as a Berkley Ace trade paperback on 4th November 2008. Ace is Berkley’s fantasy line. They publish Charlaine Harris – OMG, gulp! It’s interesting that they see my work as cross-genre, strong enough as a fantasy to be sold to that market, erotic and romantic enough for Berkley Heat or Sensation, because it will also come out later as a mass market in one of those lines.

The cover of THE FLAME AND THE SHADOW is simply beyond gorgeous. The artist sent me a 24 x 18 print and I cried when I saw it, it’s that beautiful. Unfortunately, I don’t have permission to show it to you just yet, dammit. Keep visiting my website and my blog, or join my newsletter.

I also have a story appearing in the Berkley Heat anthology, UNLACED (2nd December 2008), together with authors Jasmine Haynes, Jaci Burton and Joey W. Hill. Pretty damn good company, isn’t it? I’m stoked! I’m thinking of changing my name to Jenise to go with the flow.

All that said, I love the freedom of writing for Ellora's Cave. Electronic publishers generally allow their authors to push the envelope further than the big print houses and I’m rather fond of m/m. *grin* After all, that's how Ellora's Cave got off the ground - by offering readers the hotter romances they couldn't find in a bookstore. And Liseriel the Gray and her master-thief lover are already talking in my head.

I see myself as continuing to write cross-genre. My books are essentially love stories – with heaps of hot sex. But I also have to have things happening - I like action, and lots of it. Heart-stopping adventure, angst and derring-do, so that characters are tested and they grow and change. I like trying out ideas, being different. Fantasy is my first love, though I do also enjoy paranormal. My Kaminski Family stories are urban paranormals. (ELLORA’S CAVEMEN: SEASONS OF SEDUCTION 1 and A RED HOT NEW YEAR) I have more story ideas for the Kaminskis.

I like romantic comedy too, and sometimes I think I’m actually funny, but so far I’ve saved the humour for the Kaminskis and my free stories – the current one, RACKETY KATE AND THE PIRATES, and THE AMOROUS ADVENTURES OF ALICE, both available on my website and in my newsletter. They’re my light relief.

Then there’s contemporary romantic suspense. Could be fun. It probably sounds really dumb, but one of my problems is that I’ve never been to the US (I’m an Aussie, if you hadn’t realized) and I’m too lazy to do the proper research on settings. But this year, My Beloved and I will be in California for RWA Nationals and then Vancouver and Alaska. So maybe, one day…

The T-shirt Saga & My Beloved

I got the best surprise last week. A parcel arrived from Ellora's Cave and inside was a t-shirt. And not just any t-shirt! This has the cover of Gift of the Goddess screen-printed on it in full glorious colour!

I actually got a bit teary at the sight of it. *sniffle* Because it's an XL (and I'm not), I'm wearing it as nightie. So I'm sleeping with Mr Gorgeous. *sigh* Two Mr Gorgeouses I guess, if I count My Beloved. (Who is an XL.)

In fact, My Beloved even consented to model the t-shirt for your pleasure. Wasn't that lovely of him, especially as he's really very shy...

I finished, I finished! Did I say I FINISHED?!

I've finished the book I've been working on for months. YAYYYYYYY!!!!!!

Do you think I might be happy? *grin* Getting closer and closer to the end has been driving me craaazy and now it's over.

It's the weirdest feeling actually. I always finish up feeling so close to my characters that I can hardly bear to give them up. I simply loved Griff and Fort. What beautiful men. *sigh* So sexy, so masculine, they made me breathless on a regular basis. It's hard to type when your fingers are all shaky, but I managed. For you, dears. *smile*

So now it's off to my wonderful editor. Hope to have a release date soon. Ohboy,ohboy,ohboy... Watch for excerpts in my newsletter, my website and on MySpace. Here's the gist of it.

Oh, and Mirry, Jan and Fledge from Tailspin make a number of cameo appearances. I loved catching up with them!

Strongman
Denise Rossetti
Book 3 in the Phoenix Rising series.

A hard-bitten mercenary who’s had a gutful of mud and blood and death, Fortitude McLaren joins the Ten Nations Fair as a roustabout. Tough, cold and competent, he’s shocked and angered by the depth of his hunger for Griff, a circus tumbler and acrobat. Brought up in the conservative, bigoted society of the Straight Church, Fort has always regarded manlove with contempt and indifference. Not for him. Never for him.

Athletic, cocky and single-minded about he wants, Griff sets about getting it. Fort fights with everything in him, but Griff reaches him in a way no one else has ever done. It’s not just his strong, supple body. Fort is irresistibly drawn by the openhearted friendship the other man gives so freely.

Fort may have found a friend, but the cruel memories of his childhood are the greatest enemy of all. Love will be impossible unless he can win the battle within. And to do that, he must risk everything he is and everything he's ever believed in.

My sheltered life...

Okay, I must have led a very sheltered life. I've never played Naked Twister. Let alone Naked Twister online.

But yesterday, the hussies opened my eyes wide. (And also gave me a crick in the neck.) I arrived at our HunksnHussies chat too late to play with Chase, our hunky-licious cowboy, but then Miriliel the Burnished (Mirry from Tailspin) stepped up and agreed to play a round or two.

Whoo mama!

I'm here to tell you I don't regret the muscle twinges the slightest little bit. There were hussies and tails and wings and hunky male all over the place. The scenery was waaaay spectacular! Of course, Mirry had an unfair advantage, and it wasn't just because of the extra feathery appendage and the gorgeous wings. He was very...um...distracting!

SNAP! Two Recommended Reads!

How about that? Not one, but TWO hussies with fabulous reviews from Joyfully Reviewed! *happy dancing in Hussyville*!
Chase 'n' Anna was awarded a RECOMMENDED READ. Congratulations Ciana, that's soooo cool! And so was Tailspin. Aw gee...

Here's some of what the reviewers had to say -

Chase ‘n’ Ana is one deliciously hot novel that will have you tied up in an orgasmic knot of passionate desire. Imagine having the power to conjure up a spell that can enhance your lovemaking beyond your wildest dream. Oh My! May I have that power please? With its erotic sexual encounters, suspense-packed action and a luminous family that banded together when the going got tough, Chase ‘n’ Ana is a must read!

Tailspin
is a fantasy adventure that takes the reader soaring with the Aetherii and never lets them down. This book has it all. There is romance and adventure. Love and passion. Danger and demons. I was captivated from page one and loved it until the end.

Those Darn Trouble Giblets!

You may have noticed I'm very fond of words. *grin* I collect interesting and unsual expressions.

Did you know that a slang expression for the male genitalia in the 18th century was "trouble giblets"?

Think about it for a minute.

The first time I read that, I finished up in tears of laughter over those darn trouble giblets. And every time I visualize what a chicken neck actually looks like, I'm off again. *snicker* But when the DH asks me what I'm laughing at, I tell him lies. I'm kind that way.

I bet you anything you like, next time you see Your Beloved in the shower, you're going to get a fit of the giggles. What are you going to say when he asks you what's so funny, hmm?

Denise *still laughing*

Poor babies! Hunks laid low.

Is your man worse than the kids when he's got a cold or the flu?

That's pretty typical, according to a just published Australian survey. And this is news???!!! *grin*

90% of women thought they coped better and what's really interesting, 60% of men agreed! Not only that, they admitted they'd expect their female partner to look after them. Well, of course.

The thing I found hard to believe is that only 30% of women admitted they got cranky or irritated with their man when he whined and moaned. Only 30%??? Heavens, I remember when my DH got a nasty flu bug. He lay on his bed of pain, calling weakly for something every five minutes - orange juice, a painkiller, the newspaper, a cloth for his manly brow, a hand to hold. Etc, etc, ad nauseum. And his timing was uncanny. Every time I collapsed into a chair with a sigh of relief...

Poor darling. I was so horrible to him, he hobbled back to work before he was really well enough and had a relapse. I felt awful.

As for the other side of the coin, only 32% of women said their man made a fuss of them when they were sick. Guess I must be one lucky hussy...

Are you?

BIRTHDAY CONTEST!!! Win a laminated, autographed poster

It's the first birthday of my newsgroup! I can hardly believe it. What an incredible year, but soooo much wicked fun. We're up to Chapter 13 of The Amorous Adventure of Alice. That girl has STAMINA! (So do my newsletter subscribers.)

To celebrate, I've managed to persuade Miriliel the Burnished (Mirry to his friends) to take a break from his scholarly research and do an interview for us. Believe me, it wasn't an easy task!

Last time Mirry dropped in, on a Hussies List Mom day, he swears he left several tail feathers behind. I had to do some fast talking. Lucky I talk VERY fast. And loud.

Mirry is one busy Aetherii, though just between us, I suspect it's Fledge and Jan who take up most of his attention. ;-)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What would you like to ask Mirry? Any question at all. This is your opportunity.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If you haven't read Tailspin, that's okay. Pick up the general idea by checking the excerpt on my website -
http://www.deniserossetti.com/tailspin.html or at EC -
http://www.ellorascave.com/productpage.asp?ISBN=9781419909108 They're not the same.

I will use as many questions as time permits, but Mirry will personally choose a winning question for -

***THE PRIZE***

A laminated, autographed (by me) poster of Mr Shades (that is, Ryan), the oh-so-hunky cover dude from Ellora's Cavemen: Seasons of Seduction Vol 1. Here he is in full, glorious size -
http://www.deniserossetti.com/SoS1_cover.html

AND ALSO - two other readers' questions will be selected to receive a set of oversized, colour, autographed postcards of all three of my gorgeous EC covers. (Syneca ROCKS!)

The interview will be posted on my website.

Email me at deniserossetti @ gmail.com (without the spaces). Contest closes 8th June 2007.

I've been tagged! 8 Random Things About Me

I've been tagged! Christine Wells has tagged me to write eight unknown, obscure and meaningless facts about moi. And she looks so innocent too. Whoever would have thought she can do the splits? Believe me, I had NO idea!

I've been thinking about this for days and I'm up to six, I theeenk... *deep breath* Here goes...

1. I'm a really good knitter, as in I can follow any pattern, any at all. But I'm a craftsperson, not an artist, more's the pity. I did manage a Kaffe Fassett vest once and it still looks good. I have a great collection of books about knitting. And I did teach myself to sew in the end too.

2. In the weeks before my GARDEN wedding, it rained cats and dogs every single day. The result was a flood of such major proportions that the city ground to a halt. I still remember my lovely mother-in-law-to-be sobbing to my Mum on the phone that there was 20 feet of water between her family and the GARDEN wedding. My Mum cried too. When I stood next to My Beloved in front of the minister (INDOORS), I looked up at him (My Beloved, not the reverend) with so much love in my heart, thinking, well at least I have my darling. His beautiful blond hair was in wet rats tails and a big drop fell off the end of his nose. *sigh*

2. (continued) (This is almost worthy of another number of its own.) Because the airport was closed, we spent our wedding night in his little flat - full of bachelor housekeeping - musty towels, old newspapers etc And a squillion slugs who were so wet they'd crawled in under the door looking for a dry spot. I cried so hard, he let me choose the hotel for the next night. The one I picked got flooded the following day. I waded out of the hotel foyer in my bikini and the water came up to my armpits. It was cold. And dirty. Blech.

3. I have a birthmark on my shoulder blade. It looks a bit like a cross-eyed butterfly. When I was teaching, I wore a summer dress one day and the kids asked me about it. I told them I was a lost Ruritanian Princess and it was the Royal Birthmark. One dear little soul believed me for a whole three minutes.

4. I like dogs fine, but I really love cats. I had a dear old Burmese boy who died peacefully in my lap at 19. (The vet came to the house. Wasn't that nice?) I still miss him, though it's eight years ago now. He was my friend.

5. I belonged to an amateur dramatic company for years. I played the murderer in "Death on the Nile". Yeah! I can carry a tune, though it's pretty ordinary. I even had a solo in a pantomime kind of thing once. My character was 10 years old and I sang "My god, how the money rolls in." Whoohoo, fame at last! Loved it!

6. My son had no name for the first ten days of his little life. I was so convinced I was having a girl, I blithely agreed to any boy's name my husband suggested during the pregnancy. Lucky I was lying down when they handed me the baby! I was SO surprised. But then I had to think really quick not to get stuck with something awful. (Except I didn't think quick, just kept bleating about the pain, the pain! It worked.)

7. I don't watch TV. At all. Just got out of the way of it. Means I miss all sorts of cultural things, but hey, I'd rather write my own adventures!

8. I'm Irish on both sides. My great-great-whatever grandfathers joined the British army and went out to India with the Raj. When I was little we had a leopard skin my Grandad had shot. (Yes, I know, but it was a different world then - he shot tigers too.) I used to sit on it to have my play tea parties. Each claw was longer than my little fingers.

Wow, I made it! All eight! How about that?

Now I'm tagging, um... Sally Painter, Susie Charles, Ciana Stone, Keziah Hill, Cat Marsters, Jennifer Ashley, Kayelle Allen, Melany Logen.

Hints on Hussyness

I‘ve just posted Chapter 12 of my free story, The Amorous Adventures of Alice. http://www.deniserossetti.com/alice.html If you look at what Alice has done – and what’s been done to her – that girl is a TOTAL hussy! In addition to the amazing Will, her own true love, she’s been having hot kinky fun with the King of the Fairies, Wolverine, a whole lot of randy little fauns and a mirror with a cute lisp. And her best friend is a giant beaver. (Don’t ask.)

BUT – and here’s the kicker. It’s all happening in a dream and she hasn’t woken up yet.

We’re all hussies in our dreams, aren’t we? Oooh YES!

So, what helps you be a hussy in real life? What gives you the confidence to make those slinky hussy moves?

For me, it’s wearing sexy lingerie, the lovely wispy stuff that actually MATCHES and still makes the best of what you’ve got. Then there’s the hussy shoes, the do-me heels. You already know about them - http://www.deniserossetti.com/bio.html When I walk in those shoes, damn, I feel like a hussy. Yeah!

What about you?

Denise

PS In case you’re worried about Alice’s HEA, don’t be. We’ll get there. I know how it ends, OK?

Hunk Hunting 101: Binoculars

I've just got home from the football. I'm still trying to stuff my tongue back inside my mouth. If you want to see why, just click here. Put the coffee down first.

You see?

Oh, all right, here's another one.

Bear with me now, hussies. Just a bit of necessary background before we get to the good bit (ie the hunks!). There are five codes of football played in Australia - soccer, Rugby League, Rugby Union, American Football and Aussie Rules (AFL). We have season tickets for the AFL and every week I wear my team scarf, take the binoculars and prepare to scream myself hoarse.

Aussie Rules is a home-grown game, peculiar to this country. It has its origins in English public school football, with a bit of Gaelic football thrown in. It's an incredibly free-flowing game, requiring the players to leap high in the air to take the ball, to run for miles, to tackle and kick. Some players run the equivalent of a half marathon in every game.

Are you seeing where this is headed? These men are simply GORGEOUS. Athletes at the peak of their powers. And because of the nature of the game, they're tall and lean and muscular (mostly well over 6ft), not thumping great tanks. They all - and I mean ALL- have six packs like you wouldn't believe, the tightest hardest butts and fabulous legs.

I often think they're the modern equivalent of the warriors of the tribe - the most perfect physical specimens, the ones all us cave women want to father our babies. The testosterone in that stadium is choking sometimes. Talk about alpha males on the hoof!

And they wear... um, let's see... A sleeveless jersey (shows the biceps), short shorts (so they can kick properly, I guess, but hey, do I care?), socks and boots. No padding, no armour, only a mouth guard.

This guy is one of my all-time favourites. Not only does he have a sexy bod, he's got a killer smile. I go all limp and noodle-y for a smile like that. Green eyes, BTW. And he's a nice guy, a genuinely nice guy. Most of them are. They do a lot of work with kids, not only footy, but charity work. And holy moly, can he play the game!

We had an encounter once, but that's a story for another post. heh heh

Because no sacrifice is too great to make in the interests of hussie-dom. I make use of those binoculars like you wouldn't believe. (Or maybe you would?) I imprint those beautiful bodies in motion in my mind and I put them in my books in all sorts of ways so incredibly naughty, they'd probably be shocked! *snicker*

Mr Gorgeous thanks all hussies!

Hi there Hussies!

Checking in with my first Hunks 'n' Hussies blog post. I ain't a virgin no more. *stop that snickering, you hear?*

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed our List Mom day. It was fast and furious and Susie and I were up all night, but boy was it worth it for the wicked fun! And Mirry tells me he had a great time too, though he's convinced he left a few tail feathers behind, poor man! 'Fess up, the guilty hussy!

None of us can wait to do it again! But I've learned my lesson. Next time I have a thermos of coffee and a plate of chocolate brownies at my elbow.

My BIG NEWS is that Mr Gorgeous (aka the cover of Gift of the Goddess and my sig pic) is February Book of the Month at Erin Aislinn's website. Go see!

He and I thank every wonderful hussy who voted for him, but most especially we thank...

drum roll....

*** SYNECA, GODDESS OF EC COVERS!! ***

I was a newbie author and I got this incredible cover from Syneca. How lucky can a hussy be? And what's even nicer is that Syneca is the sistah hussy of our own Ciana - as in sister, for real. That's what I call keeping it in the family. heh heh

Keep well and happy,

Hussy Hugs
